Advice from British Marine on yacht maintenance during lockdown

Dear Gweek Classic Boat Yard Community,

A quick note to share an update from British Marine regarding boat maintenance during lockdown. Having met with the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) on 2 November, they have released the following statement:

"Where British Marine has been able to gather some specific clarity from Government, DEFRA officials have stated they do not consider private individuals visiting their boats for maintenance or winterisation purposes as an essential activity for leaving their primary place of residence.

DEFRA has confirmed that under PART 4 of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) (No. 4) Regulations 2020, a member of the public can pay a business to maintain their boat on their behalf during the lockdown."

I hope this provides some clarity on the current situation - we are grateful for the understanding of all our boat owners during this time, and assure you we will welcome you back to the boatyard as soon as it is safe and permitted for us to do so.

November Lockdown Update

Dear Gweek Classic Boat Yard Community,

Following the recent lockdown announced by HM Government on the 31st of October I wish to inform you of certain measures that will be implemented going forward. These have been made in discussion with stakeholders and with the interest of boat owners, residents and the Gweek Community in mind.

1. We are maintaining the programme to bring all boats out of the water this week. From 0001 hours on the 5th of November 2020 the yard will be shut to boat owners. Please make sure that if there are tasks to be done to prepare your boat for winter, you complete them prior to this time. If you cannot do this the yard staff will be available to help you carry out any last minute tasks. We offer a check service, including electricity top up etc. Please contact the office for more information. With any boats that require to be craned after this date, owners will have a reasonable amount of time to prepare their boat for winter in the yard and take off any equipment.

2. The toilets and showers will be only available to staff and residents.

3. The office will remain open but no browsing in the chandlery. Please maintain the social distancing in place.

4. The contractors on the yard will be able to continue working on their projects and in their sheds.

5. The café will continue to offer take-away food and drink. This should be collected immediately and consumed off the yard. Café visitors are not to wander around the yard.

6. There are to be no visitors or dog walkers onto the yard.

I realise this will be frustrating to many, as boat owners may wish to use this time of lockdown to work on their boats. However, we have to think of the wider community and consider what is allowable within the spirit of the lockdown measures.

Theft of boats at Helford Passage

Dear Boat Owners,

Following thefts of outboards at Helford Passage last week, Helston Police have released some advice on boat security. Reduce the opportunity and reduce the likelihood of being a victim of crime by considering the following tips.

• Keep your boat secure and remove items that can be removed, or secure them.

• Mark your possessions and displaying the fact that you have taken such action will deter thieves.

• Prepare and record a list of all identification and serial numbers. You can record such information for free on www.immobilise.co.uk.

• Use padlocks that are appropriate and recommended for maritime environments.

• Consider fitting a strongbox, particularly if you travel to different ports.

• All on deck items must be readily available when the boat is in use e.g life raft but when moored, along side or at a mooring the same items become attractive to thieves. Develop a routine to secure such items before and after you set sail.

• Remember, ropes and fenders have a re-sale value and are easily stolen.

• If you use a mooring and then use a dinghy, think about how you can secure your boat before leaving it. Dinghies are a popular target for thieves as they are so easy to steal.

• Sign up to D & C Alerts. Devon and Cornwall Alert is a two-way community messaging system operated by Devon and Cornwall police. The system helps us to connect with our communities, it tells people what is happening in their area and allows them to respond directly with any information. Visit alerts.dc.police.uk to sign up.

• Call Police on the 101 non-emergency number to report a crime or suspicious behaviour. If an immediate attendance is required always call 999. For advice on non-urgent matters (not to report crimes) you can contact PCSO Julia Berry who is the local officer for Helston area. Please email helston@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk.

Problem solving at Gweek Boat Yard!

We are a month into the re-opening of the boatyard and it is great to see a return to a semblance of ‘normal’. We have enjoyed safely welcoming back our boat owners to the yard; it has been great to see familiar faces and boats being worked on.

The past month has been a very busy one for the whole GCBY team and I’d like to thank all the staff for their hard work preparing for and executing the re-opening.

During a full week of craning earlier this month, we had a problem with the crane and had to stop lifting in boats when a small electrical/hydraulic part stopped working. Although boats were not in any danger we could not continue and had to hire in a replacement crane in order to get boats in the water as planned. Mark Aichroth’s son was despatched to Wigan to get a part on Saturday and Macsalvors courtesy of Cameron Macquarrie despatched a crane within 30 minutes of receiving the call. Our crane stopping working could not have come at the worst time coinciding with the big tides and when the largest boats wanted to go into the water. Macsalvors provided cranes for Saturday and Sunday with skilled operators including Ben Longman. The problem was that we could not lift and carry with the Macsalvors crane so had to do double lifts as we transferred boats onto our trailer to move them around the yard. By Tuesday of that week, bar one boat, we managed to get them all in the water with some intensive sessions of craning. An amazing example of team work from the yard staff.

Some boats we had to escort as they were leaving on lower tides than they would have liked - a problem that will be resolved as we now have permission from the MMO to dredge the channel right down to the seal sanctuary from November onwards.

Our crane is now back up and running: we believe the problem arose due to the crane being out of use for an extended period of time during the lockdown, despite weekly starts by our skeleton staff. I want to thank all the customers that were affected for bearing with us as we went forward. A tough time but working the problem we managed to achieve everyone going in bar one, even though it may not have been at the right time.

Welcoming new staff and saying goodbye to a member of the Gweek team

Tomorrow, Friday is the day that we say goodbye to our Accounts lead, Tammy Essen. Tammy joined us in 2017 soon after we acquired the yard and she was instrumental in changing the administration and improving the processes of the yard. A Gweek resident, Tammy has provided great advice and been a key lynch pin of the yard. Tammy is going to a fabulous new role in the NHS at a GP practice. We will miss Tammy enormously but we know that she and her family will stay in touch. We wish Tammy all the best and look forward to a send off party in style once restrictions lift.

We would like to welcome Kelly Proudfoot to the team replacing Tammy from Monday. Kelly, resident in Falmouth, has had a wealth of accounts and finance experience most recently in a busy design practice. Please say hello to Kelly when you visit the yard.

It has taken a while to get the right team at Gweek Classic Boat Yard. This past year has forced them to show all levels of professionalism and flexibility moving forward. Both Malcolm and I are so delighted with where we are and look forward to an even better year as we move out of lockdown.

Yard opening for boat maintenance from 2pm today

Dear Gweek Classic Boat Yard Community.

I wanted to update our customers as soon as possible on our thinking at Gweek Classic Boat Yard following the Prime Minster’s Announcement yesterday and this morning’s announcement from the RYA. I have also been in touch with other marinas since early this morning. Further updates will follow. This is provisional and subject to change.

The plan is to open the yard for boat owners from 1400 today to do maintenance and security checks (not before). The yard will remain closed to any other visitors other than contractors. Please maintain social distancing. We will put in place signage and hand sanitisers once we can get them.  Please ensure you:

• Limit contact with other people especially the residents and staff

• Keep your distance if you go out (2 metres apart where possible)

• Wash your hands regularly

• Self-isolate if you or anyone in your household has symptoms.

Assuming the interpretation of the Government’s advice is correct we will start boat lifting early on Wednesday morning and will aim to get all boats in the water as soon as possible. We will contact you to let you know available slots when your boat can go in. Annoyingly the tides are lower than we would like so we will need some careful planning. Please bear with us as we try to accommodate your wishes as soon as possible.

To protect our loyal staff we will request you do not go into the chandlery unless absolutely necessary. Items to be purchased can be delivered to your boat.

Update: yard remains closed, office closed for bank holiday

Dear Gweek Classic Boatyard Community,

I am writing to update you on the situation at Gweek Classic Boat Yard. The yard remains closed for the foreseeable future for boat owners; thank you for your understanding and patience during this time. The yard office is closed over the weekend but Justin our yard hand will be providing security. We are hopeful that there will be a relaxation in social distancing rules in May and that we will have the option to launch boats in late June/July. This virus still has to run its course and I understand it will continue to get worse before we see a drop in infections.

Despite this we are working up a plan to get boats back in the water when restrictions are relaxed. We will attempt to do this as quickly as possible and bring in additional manpower to make sure we can do it in as short a time as possible. We will also offer to put boats directly on the moorings. We will work with you to make sure that any preparation work is completed, however our priority will be to get boats in the water.

I realise this is a tough time for everyone and we are committed to making the impact as small as possible.

We wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you all when the restrictions have been lifted.

A letter to the Gweek Classic Boatyard Community

Dear Gweek Classic Boatyard Community,

I am writing this email during unprecedented times and I wanted to communicate with our loyal customers and friends with this personal email. As in line with others in the boating community the boat yard is closed for the foreseeable future. I realise this is so frustrating for those looking forward to getting their boats in the water and using the time to do much needed work on their treasured boats. However, I need to protect our staff who continue to look after your boats that are on the yard, and most importantly the residents on the yard who in some cases are particularly vulnerable. We have a great little community and it is heartening to see everyone pulling together. I have also been in touch with other marine industry operators and it is important we all do the right thing in this difficult time.

The craning season is important to us to keep the yard as a going concern. Whilst this is tough I am confident we can weather this storm, and when the restrictions are lifted be able to offer the services you require with dedicated pride and enthusiasm. I want to reassure you that as soon as restrictions are lifted we will work tirelessly to get you back in as soon as possible. It is vital to me to ensure the staff we currently have weather these times and have jobs when they come back to work. We have taken a long time to get the right people in the yard and we have a duty to ensure they are looked after.

Craning operations suspended

Dear Boat Owners,

It is with regret that we have to announce that we will be suspending craning operations at Gweek Classic Boat Yard from today. In my communication from earlier in the month I mentioned that we would continue craning while we have the staff available to do so. This is no longer the case and it is with significant regret that we have had to announce this. I realise the benefits of owners being able to use their boats during this difficult time, however we are left with no other choice. I also realise that the situation is very fluid at the moment and in coming days this decision may have been made for us. A number of yards are closing and I spoke to Birdham Pool at Chichester who closed today.  

For the time being boat owners, residents and contractors may use the yard, however this may have to be reviewed. The chandlery may not be accessed but we will be able to offer products to allow boat owners to work on their boats. We will review how this takes place. The office will be staffed Monday to Friday on a reduced-hours basis. Contact will be through the window, so no coming in for a chat please.

COVID-19 Update from the Boatyard

Dear Boat Owners,

I am writing to you during these very tough times of Covid 19 restrictions. I won’t debate the subject but clarify what we plan to do at Gweek Classic Boat Yard. We realise that sailing maybe one of the few things people can do during the COVID 19 restrictions.

1. As long as our yard staff are fit and well and not confined to their homes through restrictions or sickness, we will continue to launch your boats throughout the Spring. We will maintain a safe distance and and not interact in the normal way to protect the team and yourselves from infection spread. We request that if you have any contact with the COVID 19 virus or show any symptoms you do not present at the boat yard.

2. Some boat yards are closing, however we want to take a pragmatic approach and allow boat owners to work on their boats and have their boats launched.

3. We are happy to clean your boat, antifoul, prepare it and place it on your mooring ready to go at a reduced rate during this period. This will avoid you having to have any interaction should you wish.

4. We will not be adjusting prices until October 2020 and are happy to store your boat over the summer should you not wish to launch it. If you would like to store your boat with us over the summer please contact the office on 01326 221657 or email info@gweekquay.co.uk.

5. The café is trying to maintain a reduced service and we are supportive to Susie and her staff. However the situation is changing day by day.

6. The chandlery will remain open but we would prefer contactless card payments or payment on account.

Antifouling & Environmental Impact

Dear Boat Owners, Skippers & Crew,

We have recently been involved in a meeting with Cornwall Marine Network, the Environmental Agency, the MMO and all the other boatyards in the Cornwall area. The reason for this meeting was to discuss the ever-developing technologies used in the production of anti-fouling systems, the environmental impact of anti-fouling and the processes that are commonly used on the front line to remove fouling, remove old anti-fouling and what is done with contaminated biomass and debris from the pressure washing/hull cleaning.

The EA found themselves taking legal action against one of our local boatyards in the early part of 2019; the root cause of this action was the boatyard being seen to be polluting an inland waterway due to the contaminated run off during pressure washing a yacht. The heavy metals found in anti-fouling cause considerable damage to the seabed and are being absorbed/consumed by the animals, crustaceans and organisms that call the sea their home. There was a change in law in 2003 that saw a chemical called Tributyltin effectively banned with a view to have all anti-fouling paints free of such by 2008. The subsequent chemicals that have been developed are still rich in heavy metals that continue to pose an environmental impact that is detrimental to maintaining our lush Cornish waters and further afield.
 
With this in mind, we as a business are changing the way in which we undertake and handle the pressure washing, removal of antifoul and the debris created. We are introducing a policy that obligates every boat/vessel/yacht to be pressure washed by Gweek Classic Boatyard, from which we can retain contaminated water, biomass and debris, pump it to the equivalent of an IBC Container, to which we can then add a recommended polymer and allow the separation of harmful chemicals, so that we can release the uncontaminated water and retain the pollutants for safe disposal. Due to the agreement between the boat owner and GCB, once your vessel is out of the water and on our property, an effective waste transfer agreement is in place, meaning that if contaminated biomass or debris is allowed to pollute via dissipation through the ground or wash-off GCB become liable. We will be insisting that if there are any plans to work on your yacht below the waterline, particularly relating to the removal of old anti-fouling, you would discuss your task and comply with our requests.
 
When your boat comes out of the water, the process of pressure washing will need to change. This will involve more time and potentially affect the amount of boats we can do in one day. Pressure washing will only be able to be provided by GCB on boat hulls below the waterline. This will involve some cost and we will incorporate it as part of the craning out process.
 
We have invested in a very hi-tech marine oscillating sander, which we will be renting at a very reasonable rate, this has been recognised for its effectiveness in reducing air born debris and collecting in a powerful 60L vacuum. The immediate area surrounding your yacht will need to be covered with a tarpaulin to contain any subsequent debris and disposed of. There will be a blanket ban on dry sanding whilst ashore unless this piece of equipment and method is used.

Charges to hire our marine sanding equipment:

Day 1 £45.00
Day2+ £25.00

The unit must be booked out for the intended duration of the project. If your rental period ends, the process starts again.
 
As the industry continues to develop more eco-friendly and effective anti-fouling systems, we are seeing a big incentive to move to Coppercoating and even silicone-based treatments for hulls. We can complete this work at GCB either in-house or via Hardman Jones Marine. Also, through our relationship with Seaware we can provide stronger anti-foul that can be ordered and applied by GCB; this is a commercial product and cannot be sold to the public over the counter. The team in the office are also able to assist you with your selection of over the counter anti-foul products; our relationship with Seaware will ensure you get the most appropriate product at a competitive price.

We will continue to offer an anti-fouling service to our clients at a cost of:

Standard Anti-Fouling: £40 per hour plus Materials & Consumables
Racing Anti-Fouling: £40 per hour plus Materials & Consumables
Copper Coating: £40 per hour plus Materials & Consumables

Current Projects

St Michael's Mount Water Taxis

The water taxis project by Chris Hardman Jones and Duncan Skingley is progressing well: two boats are almost completed with four more to arrive. The hardware arrived last week and the internal moulds, which are being custom made here at the boatyard, are completed for two of the boats.

Ben Harris

Ben Harris is now fully installed in the green shed with his yacht build well underway. He is working on a 34ft gaff rigged cutter yacht, inspired by the Falmouth Quay punts, built with traditional methods from wood, much of it sourced, sawn and seasoned in Cornwall. It is a collaborative design and build with Jack Gifford, Naval Architect, and the owner Simon Wisker who will be working part time on the build.

Andrew Cox Marine

Recently we have welcomed Andrew Cox Marine to the boatyard, offering all aspects of marine engineering and electrical work, from routine engine servicing to inboard diesel engines, outboard motors or high performance petrol stern drive power units, advanced diagnostics including electronic EFI systems, engine rebuilds, stern gear replacement, electrical repairs and component installation and complete re wiring.

If you are in need of a new engine, they are able to supply all major brands of engines, both inboard and outboard at competitive prices as well as providing a full installation service.

As part of the yacht build project underway by Ben Harris, Andrew Cox Marine has been commissioned by the owner, Simon Wisker, to supply and install the new Beta Marine diesel engine and all the associated ancillary components. He will also be undertaking the electrical installation on the new boat.

Andrew Cox Marine are this year celebrating 20 years of service in the marine sector covering Falmouth, Helford, St Mawes and the Roseland Peninsula as well as the rest of the Carrick Roads and surrounding areas.

Planning permission

We are very excited to announce that planning permission for the Long Barn and Customs House conversion has been approved. The buildings will be converted into holiday lets later this year.

Undercover storage is nearly full now and we have received a good number of bookings for outside storage. If you have a deep draft boat please let us know as soon as possible so we can offer the best tides to lift you out.

Part of the continuing improvements to the yard this year: our new telehandler and fork lift poised to lift out boats this season.

Apprenticeships at the boatyard

We will be supporting two apprentice positions at the boatyard in partnership with Cornwall Apprenticeship Agency: an Apprentice Yard Hand and Business Administration Apprentice. Please share with anyone you think may be interested!

French interns back this year

Once again we will be welcoming two young French interns to the boatyard in September. The two young people who worked with us last year were a resounding success and we look forward to continuing this project.

We celebrated the launch of our new venture Constance Cruises with a launch party at The Boatyard Cafe. We're continuing to make improvements to the yard and are looking forward to the Falmouth Classics in June.

Falmouth Classics 2019

Once again Gweek Classic Boatyard is pleased to be a sponsor for the Falmouth Classics. Constance and Sara will be taking part in the festivities on Falmouth Haven Pontoons. Constance will be available for charter and owner Mark Aichroth will be racing Sara.

Anne and the team will be manning the gazebo at The Tilley Maritime Village on Custom House Quay where, along with Justin of English Braids, they will be making Baggy Wrinkles and teaching (or learning!) how to splice.

Speedwell of Cremyll

After nine months of intense work by Andrew Massey, Duncan Skingley and Susie Ferris, Speedwell of Cremyll finally came out of the shed last week. She is due to be launched on Monday 20th May.

Craning in almost finished

The boatyard is gradually emptying out allowing yard staff to concentrate on yard maintenance and improving infrastructure. We wish you all a happy sailing season and look forward to seeing you in the autumn.

Quay wall finished

Work on the new wall at the quay frontage is now complete providing a much more welcoming place for boats coming up river to the boatyard.

St Michael's Mount Water Taxis

Chris Hardman Jones, Trevor, Lance and Duncan are continuing with the St Michaels Mount Water Taxis. They are fitting out the first two of five. A mould was built to the spec required by St Michaels Mount and the work will be ongoing for 12 months.

Cornish Pilot Gig Build

Work on the Cornish Pilot Gig build is progressing well. Work is being carried out by Peter Martin, grandson Dylan and his friend Patrick. The moulds are now all in and ready for planking.

Sif Refurb by Amanda Champion

Before and after pictures of Sif after a really fantastic refurb job onsite by Amanda Champion. Sif ended up on the rocks at Helford before Christmas.

Constance Launch Event

We celebrated the launch of Constance Cruises with a gathering at The Boatyard Cafe at the end of April with over 80 locals. Fantastic food was provided by chef Mark Devonshire and team David and Sophie of The Wood-Fired Kitchen, who will be catering for guests aboard Constance, with oysters provided by Trystan of Port Navas Oyster Farm. Thanks to all who came along to celebrate the launch with us; it was great to see so many people in attendance and excited about this wonderful boat.

Several bookings were taken on the day and Constance has had a few successful trips already with very happy passengers.

We are very lucky to have put together a really great, experienced and knowledgable crew to take care of guests aboard Constance. Pictured above: skippers David Furness and Samantha Parker and crew John Ball.

Samantha grew up on the Thames on her parents' boat, and has worked as head boatman at Cliveden House Hotel. She also skippered the umpire launch for the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race on the Thames and one of the umpire launches for Henley Royal Regatta.

David moved to Cornwall five years ago and has spent as much time on the water as possible ever since. With a passion for boats and the local area, he is excited to share his local knowledge with guests and be a part of the Constance project.

John will be responsible for managing front of house on board. JB has lived in Falmouth for over forty years and is well known to many as owner/restaurateur of The Seafood Bar in Falmouth. He has also managed front of house at Castaways and The Waterside, Flushing and currently works at the Golden Lion in Stithians. He brings a calm, knowledgeable and relaxing attitude to Constance, giving the customers a memorable experience with his hands on front of house skills.

Constance is available to book for a two and a half house cruise along the Helford River, with lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, or drinks and canapés. Sample menus are available on the website as well as an availability calendar and booking form.

New yard hand

We are pleased to welcome a new member of the team to the boatyard this month. Our new yard hand Don moved to Cornwall in 2012 with his wife Samantha (Skipper of Constance), who he met while working on the Thames.

Don trained in Traditional Boatbuilding at Falmouth Marine School, and worked for 10 years as a traditional wooden boatbuilder on the River Thames specialising in restoration, repairs, painting and varnishing of wooden river craft.

New Gweek Boatyard residents

Last week we we also welcomed some new residents to the boatyard, born over the weekend to our resident swans: six lovely cygnets. They can be found in the river by the boatyard so do come and say hello!

Mid Season Lift and Pressure Wash (maximum 25 ft)
We are offering a new service this year, for a Mid Season Lift and Pressure Wash. £138 will give you a lift, pressure wash and return to keep the hull pristine for all you racing fanatics.

Undercover storage now available over summer
Undercover storage is available now during the summer months until the end of September for any projects you would like to undertake.

Price Increase
There will be a slight price increase coming into affect from 1st August 2019. The increase will affect the craning costs and onshore storage, but chocking and boat stand hire remains the same. Spreader bar costs have been reduced. Price list is available to view here.

Shop open six days a week
Our Chandlery is going from strength to strength with new stock in all the time. If we don’t have what you want, we can always get it for you. Do come and visit us.

Holiday lets and new pontoons

We are waiting on planning for the conversion of the Long Barn and Customs House, to provide holiday accommodation at the boatyard, as well as new pontoons.

February Newsletter

Another busy month at the boatyard with lots of exciting developments planned for 2019, including the restoration of the Victorian launch Constance, a Cornish Pilot Gig build and continuing improvements to the yard.

Constance

Restoration work on Constance is now well underway with shipwright Duncan Skingly taking out the Gribble in the keel band and scarfing in new sections.  A steel shoe is being fabricated to run the full length of the keel and repairs have been completed to the hatches and cockpit sole.  Her first trip has been booked for the beginning of May. Chris Hardman Jones and Susie Ferris will be finishing and painting. Her electrics motors have been installed by Bob Orchard and are working well.

Availability, sample menus and prices will be announced in March on the website.

Long Barn and Customs House

We are pleased to announce we have applied for planning permission to convert the Long Barn and Customs House into holiday cottages at the boatyard. We will also be installing a new, state-of-the-art sewage system for the benefit of all residents, including houseboat residents, as well as new showers and a toilet block as part of the showers.

We are committed to working with local tradespeople and contractors wherever possible and hope to see benefits to local businesses as a result of the holiday cottages.

Falmouth Classics

We are looking forward to Falmouth Classics which we will be sponsoring along with Ratsey & Lapthorn, classic sailmakers who have been in the business for over 200 years. Be sure to come and see us in the Maritime Village on Customs House Quay.

Chris Hardman-Jones Water Taxis

The first of six hulls for St Aubyns Estate (St Michaels Mount) are here and plugs are being made for the ring decks and internal fittings. She is being dry fitted with keel irons, moulding for steps and engines boxes being completed. If you are in the Yard, pop into the Tin Shed and have a look at the progress.

Peter Martin Gig Build

Peter Martin, Cornish Pilot Gig builder, resident of Gweek, but long-time resident on Isles Of Scilly, has started work on the new build Cornish Pilot Gig. His grandson Dylan Sofio has held a long term ambition to build a gig with his grandfather and after completing a boat building course in Rhode Island and Rolts Yard, Bristol, he has returned to Cornwall and Gweek Boatyard with his friend Patrick Killian to complete this. 
 
The gig will be built from Lincolnshire Elm (Cornish Narrowleaf elm now being in short supply). Please watch the weekly progress on our website.

Susie Ferris

Surian is one of the projects that Susie has been working on for her yearly refit. 

Other news

Repairs to the quay wall are now almost complete. As many of you know the wall was falling down along the quay frontage and was not the most inviting place for boats coming alongside. Having applied for a new license from the MMO we’ve repaired the existing wall with local stone. 

After a long delay and a catalogue of disasters beyond Jez and Siobain's control, CROCUS eventually made her way up the Helford River on 7th February and she is now moored up at the bottom end of the yard. We welcome them to our community in the Yard.
 
Kylian Maria and Orlane Naour join us from their college in Concarneau for a month in March. They will be learning everything in the yard from general maintenance work and pressure washing to antifouling and engineering work. They will be our second lot of students from the school and we very much look forward to their arrival.

The Boatyard have fully involved themselves in several local groups in Gweek including the Neighbourhood Development Plan (a plan that provides the opportunity for communities to set out a positive vision for how they want their community to develop over coming years); Helford Marine Conservation Group (a voluntary organisation working to safeguard the marine life of the Helford River); Voice of the Helford (a resurrected group taking the place of the Helford River Association, to become a sub-group of HMCG) and the Marine Safety Advisory Group (water users of the Fal Estuary and Helford River, including Harbour Masters, RNLI, Coastguards, local Businesses and Leisure Groups).
It has been great to hear from the local Gweek community and as always, anyone is very welcome at the boatyard for a cup of tea and chat.

Long Barn and Customs House Planning Application

We are excited to announce that we have applied for planning permission to convert the Long Barn and Customs House into holiday cottages at the boatyard.

The renovations will be part of continuing improvements to the yard carried out since the yard was taken over by Mark Aichroth and Malcolm Beaton in July 2017, including extensive groundworks, repairing the quay walls and tidying the site. It has been great to see many previous customers returning to the yard as well as new skilled shipwrights, technicians and contractors.

In addition to the Long Barn and Customs House conversion we will be installing a new, state-of-the-art sewage system for the benefit of all residents, including houseboat residents, as well as new showers and a toilet block as part of the showers.

With the Long Barn living accommodation having fallen into disrepair in recent years we are looking forward to restoring it to a high standard with care to preserve both buildings' original features and celebrating their part in Gweek's fascinating maritime past.

Gweek Classic Boat Yard is preparing for Christmas: the Gweek Christmas lights are looking wonderful and we have the anchor illumination on the cafe. The Yard Christmas party took place on Friday and everyone is now looking forward to time with families and a recharge before an exciting next year.

Ratsey & Lapthorn

Gweek Classic Boatyard is pleased to announce a partnership with Ratsey & Lapthorn, the famous sail makers in Cowes. Ratsey & Lapthorn have been making sails since 1790 and have a fantastic heritage behind them: the chandlery will stock Ratsey products and we will have sail examples so customers can choose the Ratsey sails they will be interested in. Ratsey will also offer a cleaning and restoration service from the boatyard. Ratsey and Lapthorn will also support Gweek Classic Boatyard at the Falmouth Classics.

Falmouth Classics

Gweek Classic Boatyard is now a partner sponsor for Falmouth Classics (14th - 16th June). We will be entering Sara and the electric Victorian Launch Constance II will be taking part in the Parade. We will have a tent on the Haven and plan to showcase our partnership with Ratsey & Lapthorn. 

Constance II

Constance II is now safely tucked up in the Britannia shed. The motors are being replaced and she is being prepared for commercial service for this summer offering tours on the Helford River. Ian Munday is leading this process along with Duncan Skingley who will be doing the work. 

Speedwell of Cremyll Major Refit

Speedwell of Cremyl, a Buchanan 49ft Bermudan Yawl, is undergoing her first major refit since being built at Mashfords in 1962, by shipwrights Andrew Massey and Duncan Skingley. The ballast keel and false keels have been removed in order to inspect the keel bolts and allow the removal of the strap floors for blasting and galvanising. The deck, original and traditionally laid, was leaking badly requiring all seams to be raked out and recaulked. In addition to this both hatch garages will be replaced and the original galley layout will be reinstated. This was changed at some point in the past when Speedwell served as a sail training vessel for a number of years. Susie Ferris is varnishing all brightwork and painting topsides, anti-fouling and repainting 64 ft mast and spars.

We also have Eileen, a 1920 traditional Cornish Looe Lugger built by Curtis & Mitchell of Looe, in for new decking and planking.

October Newsletter

A busy time for the boatyard with lots of boats to crane out and storage space filling up quickly.

New team

We are into the full swing of craning boats out and it is progressing very well. We are enjoying the increased space on the yard form the ground works undertaken during the summer and the new team has really got into the swing of things. Luke Jones has taken over from John Henderson who has gone on to pursue other interests. Luke has come to us from Fugro Seacore where he ran three of their yards and was responsible for modular and drilling plants and has brought skill and precision to the crane operation. Luke also previously worked at Macsalvors doing precision lifting with their large crane fleet. Joining Luke is Jerome Pickles, a highly skilled engineer who now also lives on the yard. The office team has been supplemented by Amber Tresahar, keen classic boat sailor and owner of Kittiwake. A qualified lawyer and former Kirov Ballerina, Amber has brought a lot to the yard already. Her background makes her well suited to the demands of Gweek Classic Boatyard. Anne Oliver has now been with us for over 6 months and has brought significant order to the day-to-day operations on the yard. We have a great team ably assisted by Gemma and Tammy in the office and we look forward to the upcoming season.

The Boatyard Cafe

It seems only a short time since we were gearing up for the spring and summer season and Falmouth Classics already seems a distant memory. The cafe has been a resounding success and we have to congratulate Susie Goodwill on what has been achieved. Gweek Classic Boatyard is becoming more of a destination as the project progresses.

The cafe has moved to winter opening hours. They are now licensed and will be open late on the first Friday of every month from 6.00pm onwards with a wood fire, music, drinks and food on offer.

Monday - Saturday 0930 -1630
Sunday 1000 –1300 for breakfast only. 

Interns at Gweek Classic Boatyard

We had two French interns during September who brought a cheerful atmosphere to the yard. We would like to continue a structured intern programme and offer holiday internships to one or two local boys or girls. This could start as an initial trial but become something more regular. It is open to local young people and they must be 16 or older. Passion for boats and sailing will be preferred but attitude will be the most important deciding factor. Constance II

The yard has recently acquired a share in an exciting classic boat. Constance II was originally owned by the Shuttleworth collection and was built in 1895. The boat was used to shuttle crews form the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes to the racing yachts in the Solent. Constance II will be restored over the winter and is planned to be offered for charter next season.

The boat is electric, having been converted from steam, and is now outside the chandlery. Pop down and have a look and enjoy a coffee in the cafe. 

Chandlery revamp & other news

We are welcoming new boat builders to the yard and I plan to be able to update you in our next newsletter. The chandlery is being revamped and has a new layout. Old stock has gone into a boat jumble with some great prices on weird and wonderful products. English Braids are restocking our ropes and we have an improved selections of paints and antifouling. Seaware of Falmouth have been most helpful in getting us re-established and providing a fast delivery service. If there is anything you need we can normally obtain delivery next day. The new fork lift has been rebuilt by Malcolm and is now undergoing final testing before being used.

We have now owned Gweek Classic Boat Yard for over a year. It has been exciting and challenging in equal measures. Our customers and partners in the community have been a major support and we thank you for the helpful pointers along the way. We are not there yet by any means but we continue to advance. We have new boat owners at Gweek for the winter season and we are enjoying welcoming back our regular customers. Thank you for helping to make the boat yard a vibrant part of the boating community.

'Ariel' owner Simon Sinnott takes part in banger rally to Morocco

Gweek customer and owner of ‘Ariel’ Simon Sinnott is taking part in a banger rally from St Austell to Morocco to raise money for three charities. From 30th September to 5th October the 200 teams taking part in the Gib or Bust Banger Rally Challenge will take on the five-day adventure spanning two continents, five countries and 2250 miles, completing daily quizzes and challenges along the way.

Simon’s team is called ‘Ramsay’s European Nightmare’ and they will be raising money for three charities: Penhaligon's Friends, Living With Hip Dysplasia and The Christie NHS Foundation. You can read more about the three charities they’ve chose on the ‘Ramsay’s European Nightmare’ Facebook page. Last year the Gib or Bust Rally Challenge raised over £750,000 for charities across the UK.

They’ve got a YouTube channel where they’ll be posting daily updates on their progress.
