The quayside at Gweek is steeped in maritime history. During the middle ages, after the formation of Loe Bar, Gweek became the trading port for Helston. The quay would have been a bustling area with local punts ferrying cargos from trading vessels moored in deep water. At the peak of the area's mining trade Gweek Quay would have seen great numbers of vessel movements shipping timber and coal into the area and tin and copper out. Gweek Quay was also an import port for another successful local industry with several privateers vessels being registered to here in the 1700's. Nowadays the heavy industry has gone from the quay area but the quayside continues to thrive. |
